Graduate Spotlight: Vicky Yaquian

Meet Vicky, she will be receiving an Associate of Arts Degree in Sociology.

Vicky previously worked at a loan agency for eight years. Due to the pandemic, the loan office closed causing Vicky to lose her job.

“I realized that after eight years I was starting over. I had always wanted to go to college, my mother and brothers all have a master’s degree and I wanted to pursue that for myself. Through the process, I have been able to show my son that you can start over at any age,” she said.

Vicky’s long-term goal is to obtain a master's degree in sociology and work towards becoming a counselor for women.

Her decision to follow this career path was influenced by her interest in human social behavior, social interaction, and watching her mother care for her family while working three jobs and attending university.

Vicky hopes to empower women, explaining that “women have an enormous strength within them, they have a voice, and there are resources available in our community that assist women in difficult situations. I hope to help women find strength and provide guidance as they face challenges.”

At St. Philip’s, Vicky has served as a peer mentor and member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. She is also on track to graduate Summa Cum Laude, a distinction awarded to high-achieving students.

Vicky plans to attend The University of Texas at San Antonio and obtain a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology. In her free time, she enjoys watching The First 48 and spending time with her 6-year-old son who shares a similar interest -- reading.
